Can my data remain private even if I submit to a repository?
Answer
There are several options for researchers looking to restrict access to their data in a repository. Some repositories, such as Open Science Framework, allow submitters to create private datasets or metadata-only records. Permissions will depend on the repository, but for the most part, this will provide your data with secure external storage and make information about your data findable by other researchers without allowing them to view the actual dataset files.
Instead of and/or in addition to these options, some MSK researchers choose to use REDCap, an internally hosted tool equipped with PHI protections and allowed by MSK as the primary electronic data capture (EDC) system for non-therapeutic and/or exempt research. If you decide on this option, we recommend that you use a FAIR-compliant repository in addition to REDCap whenever possible, to ensure that data management best practices are being implemented.
